Apple Day goes fourth

Returning for a fourth nibble, Lowdham’s Apple Day Sunday will be held on 17 October 2010 in the village hall. Once again over 100 different varieties of apples and pears will form the core of the display.

Lowdham Horticultural Society members will be showing and providing tastings of the fruits, as well as a wide selection of chutneys and jams.

Apple Day Sunday has ridden a wave of renewed interest in traditional English apple varieties, as a reaction against the bland uniform fruits offered by some supermarkets. Among the unusual types that can be experienced on the apple tasting stall are Ingrid Marie, Winter Gem, Fiesta, Crowngold, and Spartan. Many of these will be available for sale.

Horticultural Society members will provide advice on apple growing and apple identification, while a range of craft and produce stalls will sell a range of produce. The popular pork and apple cobs (sandwiches) will again be available.

Apple Day Sunday opens at 11am on Sunday 17 October 2010, in Lowdham Village Hall. Doors close at 4pm. Further information from the Lowdham Horticultural Society.
