First details of 2012 Lowdham Book Festival

Week-long event is in many venues, with focus around Lowdham Village Hall

THE ORGANISERS of Lowdham’s annual book festival have released the first details of this year’s event, the 13th since it was founded in 2000. To be held over a week from Sunday 24 June to Saturday 30 June 2012, it includes a food fiesta, cricket night, and the launch of a new lecture series.

The week starts with an innovation – the Food Fiesta in partnership with Gonalston Farm Shop. With stalls from local food suppliers, talks, and demonstrations, this will be held in the marquee at Caythorpe Cricket Club.

Cricket stays on the agenda for the now-traditional cricket night on Thursday 28 June. Hosted by Chris Arnot, author of Britain’s Lost Cricket Grounds, the evening will include appearances from Jon McGregor, John Harvey, the Bookshop Band, the Family Doonan, and a number of local and national authors.

The focus of the festival remains literature, of course, and the final day on Saturday 30 June coincides with National Reading Group Day. This will showcase many forms of regional writing, including events aimed specifically at children. The organisers are dropping hints that some animal-related events may also be included.

Other activities include a day devoted to Charles Dickens, a trip to the John Clare Cottage in Northamptonshire, and the launch of The Lowdham Lecture. This is a new project for 2012, and further details are expected soon.

The full programme for the Lowdham Book Festival will be available from mid-May, which is also when the box office opens.

Hi, I’ve just found out about the Lowdham Festival because I’m a huge fan of the author Peter James. According to his website he will be making an appearance on 12 June in relation to the festival. However your dates show that the festival is happening a week or two later than his published appearance.
Can someone please give me any more details as to Peter’s appearance? Many thanks

This is all the information we have at present. We understand that the full programme will be available in mid-May and expect that the Lowdham Book Festival website will be back up and running by then (currently it is dark, as is the website for The Bookcase, the book shop in Lowdham which organises the festival). More news as we get it here on dumbles.co.uk -Ed.

We can’t help you directly, suggest you contact The Bookcase, Lowdham, for information. This independent bookshop is also the organiser of the Lowdham Book Festival. Both the festival and shop websites have been unavailable recently but we think they will be back soon (and we have mentioned to them that the sites are dark) – editor, dumbles.co.uk

UPDATE: These are the email contact details given on Lowdham Book Festival holding page (which can be found at http://www.lowdhambookfestival.co.uk/ but has been a bit erratic): janestreeter@thebookcase.co.uk info@fiveleaves.co.uk

Why exactly is there ‘An event to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee’ at a literature festival, of all things? I can see no sense (in fact only complete nonsense) in such an activity.
