LOWDHAM Book Festival may be focused on its main week of events in late June, but also has a range of other activities during the year. May sees the return of Lowdham First Fridays which, as the name suggests, is held on the first Friday of the month.
May’s First Friday event (4 May 2012) is called Narrow Marsh and Leen Times, the titles of two books by Chilwell-born author Alan Dance. Set in early 19th century Nottingham, these novels tell the story of social unrest among the framework knitters of the era. Alan’s discussion of his books will include what influenced him to write them, and how real historical events – some well-known, others less so – were woven into the stories. He will also talk a little about what was actually involved in publishing, promoting, and selling the books.
June’s First Friday (1 June 2012) is What Will You Read This Summer? With so many books available today, how do you choose something for your holiday reading? Sheelagh Gallagher, Literature and Reading Development Officer for Nottinghamshire, will advise and recommend books for you. Among the selections may be books to help you find out more about a destination, classic novels you always meant to read, contemporary fiction, or simple escapism. This is an informal and fun session celebrating why holidays and books are the perfect combination, and there will be goody bags.
Both of these First Friday events are held from 2.00 to 3.30pm in the Methodist Chapel, Lowdham, and cost £5 (£4 concessions, £3 Friends), including tea and cake. Tickets available from The Bookcase, Lowdham, 0115 966 3219.
