THE WOODLARK pub in Lambley is the location of the newest emergency defibrillator to be installed in our area. There is a similar device at the Old Ship Inn in Lowdham.
The prominent yellow box appeared on the outside wall of the Woodlark over the weekend. Inside is an automatic defibrillator, which can diagnose potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias and treat them by an electrical shock.
These automated external defibrillators (AEDs) can treat conditions such as ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia (very rapid heartbeat). The website of the Community Heartbeat Trust charity says that these devices “are designed to be used by laypersons who ideally should have received AED training”.
The growing occurrence of these devices in public places around the country is intended to allow heart attack victims to be given treatment in the critical first minutes following an episode, which greatly increases survival rates.
