Woodborough triumphs in 2010 best kept village competition

Woodborough has regained its crown as one of the best kept villages in Nottinghamshire, with the announcement today of its success in the Campaign to Protect Rural England’s (CPRE) annual competition. It saw off the other finalists – runner-up East Bridgford, Beckingham, and last year’s winner Shireoaks, to claim the trophy for Category B villages (those with a population of 700-2000).

The news was less good for Lowdham, which had been a finalist in Category A (population 2000+). Here the title went to Collingham. Runner-up in this group was Radcliffe on Trent, and the fourth finalist was Burton Joyce

The Category B win restores Woodborough to the championship position it last held in 2008.

Woodborough and Collingham go forward with Category C (300-700) winner Everton and Category D (under 300) winner Ranby to the Best of Notts grand final, which will be judged during August.

The Best Kept Village competition is organised by Nottinghamshire CPRE and sponsored by Wilkinson. Entries are submitted by parish councils and judging is divided into several rounds. 39 parishes entered the 2010 competition, with16 (four in each category) making it through to the finals. The four winning finalists receive £125, plus wrought iron plaques and framed certificates. Runners-up win £50 and a certificate.

The ultimate stage of the competition is the overall Best of Notts title which brings a prize of £1000. The winner will be announced on 17 November 2010.

Lambley Parish Council has said that it intends to enter the competition in 2011.
