Poetry to be seen and heard in the dumbles

PART of Lambley’s forthcoming Cowslip Sunday celebrations (6 May 2012) will see a novel poetry installation by local artist Alex McKenzie. ‘Poetry Seen’ will involve the installation of around 16 large banners at Bonney Doles, an area of the dumbles between Lambley primary School and Monkey Island, each bearing snatches of cowslip-related verse.

The collection spans a range of poetic talent, with contributions from local people as well slightly better known scribes such as Shakespeare and Milton.

The Poetry Seen installation is a follow-on from a pilot version at last year’s Cowslip Sunday, which had the cowslip lines from A Midsummer Night’s Dream displayed on banners in the dumbles. The project is expanded this year after Lambley resident McKenzie secured funding from Nottinghamshire County Council.

An example of the banners is shown below, but they will only be properly appreciated in full size. Cowslip Sunday includes an arts and crafts fair in Lambley Village Hall from 12noon to 5pm, a procession through the village starting at about 2pm, and the one-time-only presentation of the play Lambley Jack and the Golden Stockings on the school field at about 2.45pm. There will also be facepainting and Punch and Judy presentations, and the Cowslip Ceilidh in the evening.
